Infini RF Microneedling
Infini RF Microneedling or RFM is the next step beyond traditional laser resurfacing. RFM spares the upper epidermal layer of the skin & directs the energy to the dermal & fibroseptal layers. This results in scar remodelling & skin tightening. The Infini RF has been replaced by the newer Genius RF since 2019.
Facts Facts on Infini RF Microneedling
- RFM or radiofrequency microneedling is not a laser
- This means the upper layers of skin are spared
- Energy is delivered to the deep layers, up to 4 mm depth
- Infini RF has been replaced with the Genius RF since 2019
- Genius RF uses deeper & more powerful needles
- The latest generation of RFM uses computer-controlled energy delivery
- This results in more effective & safer treatments compared to other systems
- Each treatment is individually tailored according to clinical findings
How is the newer Genius RF different from Infini RF Microneedling?
The Genius RFM is the upgraded version of Infini RFM. We have used the newer Genius since 2019 at Clinic Cutis.
Genius RF has the following up grades-
- Deeper needles. We can go down to 4.0 mm if required.
- Better insulated needle. This means more power can be delivered with less side effects.
- Stronger motor compared to Infini RF. The stronger motor of Genius allows more consistent placement of needles to the correct depth.
- Impedance control of Genius measures resistance in the tissue. A computer adjusts energy levels based upon resistance. This allows for safer & more effective treatments.
- User feedback with Genius RF is an upgrade from Infini. With Genius, each pulse of RF energy is communicated back to the user with an audible beep. This allows for a safer more accurate treatment.
Lutronic continues to innovate & invent better devices every year. I make it a point to upgrade each piece of equipment as this gives patients the best possible outcomes.
Why is Infini unique and how does it differ from laser treatment?
Infini RF represent the culmination of many years of development in the development of RF or radiofrequency. RF uses controlled heating through electrodes. This delivers energy to the deeper layers of the skin- sparing the upper layers. This translates to better acne scar remodeling & collagen stimulation than laser itself.
Microneedling uses ‘cold needle’ technology, whilst RFM uses insulated needles to deliver heating of up to 69 degrees for a fraction of a second. Heat stimulates more collagen than ‘cold needling.’
Note: Infini has been superseded by the newer Genius RFM since 2019. For more information on Genius RF, refer below.
What conditions can RF microneedling – Infini RF treat?
RFM is used to for 2 main goals, acne scar remodeling & skin tightening.
RF can tighten skin around the jowls, jawline, & neck area. It is especially useful when I require non-surgical lifting of the lower face. I normally combine RF energy with lasers, dermal fillers & thread lifting as they all have a synergistic role to play in collagen contraction.
Infini RF has been replaced with the newer Genius RFM since 2019. These devices can treat acne scars. For more detail see below.
What types of acne scars are best suited to Infini or Genius RF microneedling?
Not all acne scars are suitable for RF microneedling. Atrophic, rolling & tethered scars do best with this treatment.
Ice pick scars are treated with surgical punch excision or TCA Paint. Box scar scars do best with ablative laser resurfacing, whilst markedly atrophic scars are best treated with dermal fillers.
Even though we have the latest state of the art lasers & energy devices, acne scars should be approached with clinical examination & scar typing.

How does Infini – Genius RF target acne scars, and why is it better than fractional laser?
Infini and the newer Genius RF treats acne scars through a process called MFR or micro needling fractional radiofrequency. This system uses fine needles to puncture the skin and deliver heat to break down scars that lie deep under your skin. Most importantly these needles are insulated. This means more accurate treatments with less damage to the upper layers of skin.
Acne scars lie under the surface of your skin. The aim of treatment is to spare the upper layers of skin (epidermis) and target collagen & scar tissue several millimeters under the surface.
Fractional (and fully ablative lasers) all work by firstly treating the upper layers before delivering heat to the acne scars. This results in prolonged healing times & redness following laser therapy. RF microneedling does not treat the upper layers, rather, it concentrates the energy where acne scars lie.
Remember, not all acne scars are suitable for Infini or Genius RF. Superficial acne scars such as box-car scars, pits & pick scarring still responds best to ablative lasers, such as the Ultrapulse, eCO2 & erbium ablative laser. RFM is best for atrophic, mixed and rolling acne scars.
How long will it take to heal from Infini or Genius RF?
2-4 days, depending on treatment levels. Healing times following RF microneedling are much quicker than with laser therapy as the upper epidermal layers are spared.
Following RF Microneedling with Infini or Genius, expect-
- First 24 hours- swelling
- Next 24-48 hours- swelling decreases
- Next 48-72 hours – skin returns back to normal.
If treatment density & power is high, downtime maybe up to one week. In some cases, ‘gridding’ or patterning may occur. This will settle down within 2-4 weeks, possibly longer in darker skin type. This is seen with most high-powered energy systems including fractional laser & RF microneedling.
Is Infini or Genius RF treatment painful?
Not going to lie on this one, it does hurt. The level of discomfort during treatment, depends on the settings and passes. We can make it not hurt by turning down the settings, but then you would not get the maximal improvements. Hence, we find ways to make it hurt less.
We minimize discomfort by-
- The use of 23/7 Lidocaine cream
- The use of nerve blocks
- The use of ‘Laughing Gas’
- Sedation if extensive areas of acne scars are treated
We ensure patient comfort levels are seen to during the procedure.
What is involved with any microneedling RF treatment?
The very first step is to see if this treatment is the correct treatment to address your concerns.
In the context of scar revision, assessing your acne scars is the very first step.
For aesthetic treatments such as skin tightening & jawline contouring, a real time assessment is required to measure dermal thickness & fat content. This ensures safety & efficacy.
How many treatments are required?
As with all fractional devices, you will require between 2-4 sessions for optimal outcomes. You will notice an improvement with just one treatment.
Can RF Microneedling be used on all skin types and Ethnic colors?
Yes. Unlike laser, Infini/Genius RF spares the upper layers of skin and treats the lower dermal layers. This means sides effects such as skin color changes are rare following RFM.
Note: In higher treatment settings, darker skin types may still get transient dots. We will warn you if you elect to undertake high energy settings. These dots take 1-6 weeks to heal, depending on the energy levels.
Why is insulted RF important & how is this different from Secret RFM?
Insulation protects the upper layers of skin. It is very important. Why? Because the degree of improvement is proportional to the amount of energy delivered into the deeper layers of skin, namely the tip of the needle. Without proper insulation, heat is dissipated throughout the length of the needle. This happens with devices such as Secret RF & Instensif.
Insulated needles delivered by systems like Intracel, Infini & Genius can deliver more energy with less collateral damage to the upper layers of skin. This is especially important if you have darker skin. Additionally, with insulation, skin heals faster as there is very little heat energy delivered to the upper layers of skin.
How much does Infini or Genius RF Microneedling cost?
Cost will vary according to who performs this procedure. For an accurate quote, book for an obligation free consultation with my nurses or dermal therapist.
Note: The Infini RF has been replaced with Genius RF, the newer model since 2019. Genius offers deeper needle lengths, more power, & better insulation. This gives better & safer outcomes.
Does Medicare cover RF microneedling?
RF microneedling is not covered under Medicare or Private Health Insurance.
An alternative to RFM is fully ablative laser resurfacing. This procedure is partially covered under Medicare. Surgical subcision is often covered. Fractional laser resurfacing is not covered under Medicare.
*For the treatment of severe scars. Medicare does not cover cosmetic treatments such as skin tightening, resurfacing for texture -wrinkles.
Davin’s Viewpoint on RF microneedling, Genius & Infini
RFM or radiofrequency microneedling by Lutronic represents the pinnacle of RF treatments. Skin needling first started off with DermaRollers nearly two decades ago, followed by stamping procedures such as the Dermapen. This was followed by radiofrequency with non-invasive devices such as sublative eMatrix- excellent for mild atrophic scars and early acne scars. Invasive microneedling was subsequently invented, however it is the insulation of the needles and sequential delivery system of Infini that made this a game changer when it first came out.
This device spares the upper layers of skin, namely the epidermis. It delivers its energy deep into the dermal layers. The adjustability of needles from 0.25 to 3.5mm makes this an extremely versatile device to treat enlarged pores, atrophic scars & tethered scars. This device is colour blind- hence it can be used on acne scars in patients of all ethnicities. This was one of my favourite devices for acne scars, and has, in my practice replaced Fraxel lasers.
Fast forward to 2021 & we have been using the much newer Genius RF. We transitioned from 2019, so have over 2 years of experience with this new device. The newer model has much more power, better insulation with the needles, a more powerful motor & importantly impedance control. This automatically adjusts the power according to the resistance, making treatments more effective & safer.
