RF Microneedling Acne Scars
RF Microneedling Acne Scars or radiofrequency microneedling is the newest generation of microneedling devices. This treatment differs from other microneedling devices due to insulation of needles & impedance/resistance control. The latter delivers safer and more efficient energy to within 0.1mm. I have replaced older RF devices including Infini, ePrime/Profound RFM & Intensif RF with Genius RF.
FactsFacts on RF Microneedling Acne Scars
- Genius uses insulated micro needles
- Insulation delivers more heat into the deeper layers of skin
- This results in better scar remodelling & collagen production
- RFM can be safely performed on all skin types
- Insulation also protects the upper layers of skin
- This means less side effects & faster recovery
- RFM is a good treatment for deep rolling atrophic acne scars
How does Genius RF differ from other microneedling devices?
RF Microneedling Acne Scars
Power but most importantly control of power & thermal insulation. This device is one of the most powerful microneedling systems, but also one of the safest. Insulation protects the surface skin whilst microprocessors measure ‘impedance’ or resistance & alters power output accordingly. As a guide this system costs nearly 10 times as much as normal microneedling systems because of its clever electronic circutity.
What conditions can be treated with radiofrequency microneedling?
RFM or radiofrequency microneedling can be an effective treatment for-
- Acne scars
- Wrinkles & skin laxity
- Stretch marks
- Poor skin tone
- General skin rejuvenation
Genius RF can be combined with lasers to yield better results than with either treatment alone. The clinical team will discuss options based upon your skin concerns and goals
How long does it take to perform this procedure?
The procedure itself takes 10-30 minutes to perform, depending on the area/s treated.
Numbing cream is used an hour prior to the procedure. In some cases we use nitrous oxide laughing gas to help with any discomfort during the procedure.
How many sessions will I require?
Majority of patients required between 2-4 treatments, depending on their expectations and concerns. As a guide –
- Acne scars require 2-4 sessions over 3-5 months
- Wrinkles & skin laxity require 1-3 sessions over 1-4 months
RFM – radiofrequency microneedling relies on your immune system to remodel & stimulate your own collagen. This takes 8-12 weeks before maximal results are achieved.

Is this treatment painful?
This treatment is well tolerated as we use medical strength local anaesthetic cream that is more effective than over the counter EMLA cream. For larger areas we prescribe an anaesthetic gas in addition to numbing cream.
How long will it take for my skin to heal after microneedling?
1-5 days depending on the depth and number of passes. High energy multiple pass RFM takes longer to heal. Our clinical team at Clinic Cutis will discuss your projected healing times prior to the procedure. In most cases special makeup called Lycogel can be used 24 hours post procedure.
What is the post-procedure care after radiofrequency microneedling?
Your therapist- nurse will discuss your post-procedure limitations based upon your treatment level. As a general guide, your skin will heal over the next 48 to 96 hours. You should refrain from heavy exercise during this time.
Healing from energy based radiofrequency microneedling is generally faster than with laser procedures, as this treatment has relative sparing of the epidermis (top part of your skin).
If treatment levels are high, you WILL have tiny areas of gridding for 2-8 weeks (depending on the setting). These marks are easily covered up with makeup or skin toned sunscreen. We will forewarn you prior to any treatments if we plan to use higher energy settings.
What are the risks of radiofrequency microneedling?
The clinical team at Clinic Cutis will discuss the potential risk benefit ratio of this procedure in the context of your treatment. As a guide-
- Risk of infection: 3%,
- Risk of persistent redness: 5% More common with sun-exposure – rosacea patients
- Risk of persistent gridding: 15% More common in higher energy/multiple passess
- Risk of scarring: <1%, extremely rare. Most commonly seen post cold sore virus infection
As a dermatology clinic we aim to mitigate as many risks as possible with all our skin directed treatments. It is our duty to discuss potential risks as part of patient consent prior to any procedure.
What other methods are there to treat acne scarring?
Genius RF is the very latest generation of radiofrequency microneedling, replacing the Infini RF. It is 2 generations newer compared to Intensif RF, Vivace RF and Secret RF. RMF is a term to describe all these devices.
RFM can give a good overall improvement in certain scar types including rolling & atrophic acne scars.
How do I know if Genius Radiofrequency Microneedling is suitable for me?
Book in for an obligation free consultation with my clinical team @ Cliniccutis . Our clinical team will guide you through the complex algorithm of managing acne & acne scars.
The majority of my work focuses on objectively severe acne scars, visible well beyond conversational distances. I do utilize Genius RF, however in the majority of cases employ devices pertaining to the individual scar types. Davin’s viewpoint on RFM (radiofrequency microneedling)
The Genius RF is the very latest generation 4 radiofrequency microneedling. This device is one generation newer compared to the insulated Infini RF, & two generations newer compared to Intensif RF, Secret RF & Vivace RF devices. Genius RFM provides INSULATED needles compared to second generation devices, meaning safer and more accurate treatments. Insulation protects the top part of the skin (epidermis), and delivers energy to the deeper dermal layers to within 0.1 of a millimeter. Impedance or resistance control of the Genius means precise and replicable delivery of energy for each treatment.
Genius RFM balances downtime, and efficacy as insulated RFM spares the upper layers of skin. RFM give much better results compared to non-energy based microneedling. The controlled heat delivered by energy devices remodels scars more effectively, whist stimulating collagen production.
