Anti Wrinkle Injections
Treatment with simple anti wrinkle injections can address dynamic muscle induced wrinkling. This treatment takes only a few minutes to perform. The look can be tailored, depending on the amount of units injected & the number of injection sites; from natural (highly advisable) to frozen.
FactsFacts on Anti Wrinkle Injections
- This procedure is considered a stepping stone in aesthetic dermatology
- The safety record spans over three decades
- Injections take 1-2 minutes to perform
- Downtime is virtually zero
- Frequently treated areas include the frown lines, forehead, chin & eyes
- Injections can also slim the face
- The outcome can be tailored from natural to frozen
- The amount of units & location of injections will determine the outcome
- I normally combine dermal fillers with anti wrinkle injections
What are the most common areas I treat with Anti Wrinkle Injections?
The most common treated areas are-
- The frown lines or number 11s
- Forehead lines
- Smile lines or crow’s feet
- Eyebrow (elevation)
- Neck banding
- Downward lips
- Facial slimming (V shaping)
- Jaw pain (clenching/masseter)
- Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis)
- Chin dimpling
How can anti wrinkle injections slim the face?
Facial slimming injections is one of the most common areas I treat, especially in Asian women. The idea behind slimming is to give a more aesthetically pleasing “V” shape. This can be achieved with dermal fillers & muscle relaxants. In some cases I use skin tightening devices such as Ultherapy to provide further toning in key areas like the jawline.
Anti Wrinkle injections are used to relax the prominent (& often super strong), masseter muscles that give facial width. Once injected these muscles relax (as compared to total paralysis). Slimming occurs within 3-6 weeks of injections.
How long does it take to perform anti-wrinkle injections?
Less than 5 minutes, depending on the complexity of each person. If you have simple frown lines, the procedure takes 1-2 minutes to perform.
Facial slimming injections take a little longer as I mark the areas before injections. In the majority of cases, patients frequently combine anti-wrinkle injections with dermal fillers. The latter takes more time.
How long do anti wrinkle injections last?
Between 3 to 6 months on average. For those who are hyperdynamic (animate a lot), the longevity is shorter. In most cases patients require less units & extend their frequency of injections over time.

Can anti wrinkle injections be combined with dermal fillers & lasers?
Most of my patients have dermal fillers & muscle relaxants on the same day. Remember filler replaces loss volume & LIFTS whilst anti-wrinkle injections relax muscles.
I also combine lasers including pico toning, laser genesis, & dermal toning as well as energy devices such as Tixel, Ultherapy, Tempsure, Pelleve & Ultraformer III.
Lasers that may cause swelling, including CO2 fractional, Fraxel & LaseMD Ultra are not performed on the same day as Botox. This is because injections can migrate away from the injection site, causing unwanted muscle paralysis.
How safe are anti-wrinkle injections, & what are the side effects?
Anti wrinkle injections have been used for over two decades, and have a long safety record.
Side effects are super rare, & depend on the site of injection. Eyelid ptosis or droopy eye is the most common side effect. It occurs in less than one percent of cases. Adverse outcomes are more common with lower face injections, namely to the DAO or depressor angularis oris muscle. This muscle pulls or depresses the corners of the lips. Though we are very careful with injections in this area, in 1-3% of cases other muscles can be temporarily paralised.
You can not have injections if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
How much does it cost to have anti-wrinkle injections?
I charge by the unit. The cost is $20 per unit of BTx.
*My nurses charge between $11 to $14 per unit, hence seeing them maybe more cost effective.
As a guide-
- Frown lines- 20-35 units
- Smile lines- 12- 16 units
- Forehead lines- 12 – 16 units
- Facial Slimming *Masseter injections 55 to 64 units
I use less B than most injectors because I ‘scatter’ injections. Performed correctly, the results are natural. The majority of patients are in their fourth decade of life onwards. In this group I tend to use less muscle relaxants & more dermal fillers. Remember, the balance of texture, skin quality & volume gives the best outcomes.
What brand of anti wrinkle injections do I use?
There are 3 types of anti wrinkle injections in Australia one called “B’’ and the other called ‘D’ and ‘X’.
I exclusively use ‘B’ as this is the injection of choice for Medicare conditions such as migraines & excessive sweating. By using one brand of injection, I can keep the variables constant. Very rarely I may use another brand *mostly X, for patients who are ‘resistant’ to ‘B’.
My nurse injectors use all three types of anti-wrinkle brands.
Davin’s Viewpoint on Anti-wrinkle Injections
I have been performing muscle relaxants for the past 17 years, and it is the safest, and most commonly performed cosmetic procedure I offer.
Ideally you should choose your practitioner based upon how you prefer to look. Personally, I am a scatter, namely I inject small units of muscle relaxants, over a wide area; this is commonly referred to as “micro-tox’ in the industry. In my opinion this gives a far better look, namely you would still be able to animate and move muscles, but you will look softer, younger, but most importantly have a natural-looking appearance.
Some patients would like a frozen look with no or very little movement. I don’t quite like that look, though I can understand why some prefer to have no wrinkles at all.
The biggest mistake I see in the cosmetic industry is that practitioners use way too much tox- you can really pick it up. The look is not natural.
Small units over a large area gives a natural look. Additionally, many Doctors forget the need for volume replacement– once you hit the mid 30s you need less Tox. This is when I transition my patients from less “B” and introduce fillers. Dermal fillers lift and replace loss volume, improving skin tone. Remember it is always the balance between skin texture, tone and volume that give the best results.
