Chin Filler & Shaping
The chin is the focal point of the inverted triangle of beauty. It is the most important feature of the lower one-third of the face, tying in the jawline. Subtle improvements with volume & contouring can balance facial harmonics, sharpening the jawline, reducing jowls & laxity in the neck area.
FactsFacts on chin shaping
- The chin is integral to facial aesthetics
- Tiny tweaks in this area can make a significant difference overall
- Chin projection is best seen on the side or obliquely
- Fillers & muscle relaxants are reversible no downtime procedures
- Chin liposuction can define the chin & jawline areas
- HIFU & RF energy devices can tighten the chin- jawline areas
- Treatments are painless & take minutes to perform
Why is Chin Filler Shape Important?
The chin is the focal point of the inverted triangle of aesthetics. Ideally, females have a gradual taper that is proportional to the nasal alar. On the side profile, the chin should have enough projection to enable a straight line to be drawn from the nasal tip, lip & chin.
By lengthening & projecting the chin, I am able to enhance the shape of the face. For patients with a round face, adding volume in the superior-inferior plane (up & down), one can subtly elongate this axis. Chin enhancement can also provide traction for the jowls & sagging neck in more mature patients.
Concept of balance. The current trend is adding volume to cheekbones, resulting in a strong & projected middle third of the face. This often further highlights the weaker lower one-third. With injectables, I am able to enhance or soften the chin area, depending upon the aesthetic needs of the patient.
What can dermal fillers do for the chin?
Dermal Filler can be used to define the chin, jawline & jowl area, lessening the weakness of a weak chin. Chin filler can lengthen and enhance one’s lower facial appearance creating a more balanced profile. Fillers can deliver subtle results or dramatic improvements in people with weaker profiles & features.
What types of fillers do I employ for this area?
Hyaluronic acid & collagen stimulating fillers. These fillers can give lift & structure to the surrounding areas. My choice is a cohesive filler that has been shown to last up to two years or more in clinical studies. These fillers appear smooth & natural when placed in the chin, jawline or jowl areas.
How long do dermal fillers last?
18 to 36 + months depending on the type of filler used. Collagen stimulating fillers tend to last longer than hyaluronic acid fillers. Longevity will also depend on your metabolism.

Is the treatment painful?
No. This is the most comfortable area to fill. I use a formulation that has a numbing agent within the filler itself, making this procedure virtually painless.
What is involved in reshaping my chin?
The very first step is a consultation.
Understanding your expectations & wishes are important steps to prescribing a treatment plan. From there we will assess your facial shape, then provide suggestions to enhance & improve.
Technique – I use both needles & cannulas in the chin area. The majority of chin & jawline contouring is performed with a cannula. The advantage of using a cannula in this area is the reduction in risk of perforating or injecting a blood vessel. Needles are often more suited to injecting the centre of the chin where there is a relative paucity of larger blood vessels.
At Cutis Dermatology we have diverse skill sets with injectables, lasers, energy- based devices, as well as surgical modalities to address your concerns.
What is the recovery time following dermal fillers in this area?
Results are immediate, recovery is virtually instantaneous. My post-treatment requests include no exercise for the remainder of the day, & no facial massage for 4 days post injections (to prevent unwanted filler migration).
Side effects are extremely rare in this location. One may have some swelling & bruising. Asymmetry is exceedingly rare, however easily corrected.
What is the volume of dermal filler used for chin contouring?
The amount of filler will depend largely on the clinical findings. Estimated guidelines,
- Subtle changes, elongation & projection: 0.5 to 1.0 ml
- Contouring & strengthening of chin: 1.0 ml to 4.0 ml
- Jowls, jawline* & contouring: 3.0 ml to 8.0 ml
* For the jawline area I prefer the use of collagen stimulating fillers as they give better structure, volume & longevity.
Can you undo dermal fillers if I don’t like my new profile?
Yes, a reversal enzyme called Hyalase can reverse HA fillers immediately. Never had to reverse a chin filler before in my career, I am sure you won’t be the first.
What other methods do I use to reshape the chin?
Simple muscle relaxants can make a huge difference in this area, with little costs & virtually no side effects. Botox can diminish muscle activity of this area, providing a subtle but noticeable softening effect. Combined with fillers, no downtime injectables can enhance your profile.
Can jawline fillers shape a double chin?
Simple muscle relaxants can make a huge difference in this area, with little costs & virtually no side effects. Botox can diminish muscle activity of this area, providing a subtle but noticeable softening effect. Combined with fillers, no downtime injectables can enhance your profile.
Can jawline fillers shape a double chin?
Fillers can reshape to a limited extent. With traction to the skin one can improve some mild cases of ‘double chins’, however directed fat reducing treatments give better & more predictable results. Treatments include cryolipolysis also known as Coolsculpting, chin liposuction, as well as double chin injections, namely Kybella or Belkyra. What non-surgical treatments are there the jawline & chin area?
I employ various energy-based devices, including RF & HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound) to help tighten this area. These devices heat up collagen, providing contraction over time.
I also use various threads including monofilament as well as suspension threads. Careful patient selection is required for a successful outcome.
What surgical treatments are there for chin shaping?
An oral maxillofacial surgeon can discuss surgical options for chin shaping & contouring. Options include surgical implants or bone shaving.
Do I do fat transfer for chin shaping?
Depends. If large volumes are required, fat transfer or fat grafting may be a viable option. For subtle changes of chin shape & profile I prefer dermal fillers.
How does liposuction help?
I also employ minimally invasive liposuction to the under-chin area. This can define the chin as well as the jawline area. In some cases, I add radiofrequency energy to this area, further tightening & defining the jawline.
Davin’s take on chin shaping
The use of injectables, both dermal fillers & muscle relaxants can soften, strengthen & enhance the chin area with no downtime. The chin forms the apex of the soft inverted triangle of the face, tying in the jawline & jowls. It constitutes the important ‘lower one third’ of facial rejuvenation.
By minor corrections in height & projection we can change the overall profile of the face. One of the biggest mistakes I see in aesthetic injections is that too much emphasis is placed on the middle one third, namely the cheek area. This results in ‘shelving’, namely when one smiles the upper cheek is almost shelf like. Fill with proportions, do not neglect the jawline & jowl areas.
Chin & jawline contouring also has a dynamic effect on the jowls. If you have lower face laxity, try this test to understand the importance of traction. Place a finger below your earlobe & traction backwards. Place another finger on the lowest point on the central chin. Again, traction backwards. See what happens to the jowls? Traction & displacement of these areas can markedly improve the jowls & marionette lines, without adding volume (& weight) to these areas.
